The Illinois Student Safety and Security Conference
The Illinois Student Safety and Security Conference aims to identify and share best practices concerning school safety, and help model a community process to stamp out school violence in all its forms, including shootings, bullying, dating violence, vandalism, gang activities, and catastrophic events such as school massacres, among others. The one-day conference will feature experts on campus violence covering key community perspectives: students, teachers, parents, local business, faith-based groups, the media, and other community resources and stakeholders. The range of topics reflects a process of total community engagement.
Emergency and Crisis Management
Find out how you can construct solid emergency systems that will be effective in your campus. At the Illinois Student Safety and Security Conference on April 29, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois, learn about emergency preparedness and how to draw up the best crisis management approaches. The conference will bring together university security officers, administrators, psychologists and psychiatrists, law enforcers, emergency management experts, first responders, and government officials -- set to discuss the complex issues that surround campus violence. Also participating in the said event are threat assessment experts, crisis planning specialists from federal agencies, the Department of Education, academic institutions, and international organizations.
Significance
Saving lives is the primary objective of this conference. And by taking action now, we surely can save lives. And by learning how to take safety precautions, people can also prevent injury and minimize damage, physically and emotionally, in moments of crisis.
But first, in order for us to effectively save lives, we first have to have a crisis plan in place. If you already have one, review it, then practice and update your plan now. But if you still don't have, this is where attending the Illinois SSSC will be of significance.
One of the main objectives of the Illinois SSSC is to assist schools and communities in situations where the lives of the students are compromised and put to danger.
Although the needs and circumstances of every school are different, the conference will provide general guidance from the experts present in the said event that can be adapted appropriately to each school’s circumstances.
Campus Safety
By attending the Illinois SSSC, individuals from different sectors -- especially the students -- will learn significant insights from the experts on matters concerning their safety inside the campus. There will be a clearer understanding on each sector’s role in protecting student safety and maintaining campus peace and order. At the same time, the conference will be promoting better knowledge on how each student can be well-equipped on crisis management when various forms of crises occur.
Attendees will also have the chance to learn from the experts how schools can successfully address problems like discrimination and violence. Each attendee will be enlightened as to how to handle a crisis situation in an orderly manner to effectively protect the lives of the students.
