Bird Flu Summit Enters into its Second Day; Features Scientific Talks and Industry Leaders

The second day of the 4th International Bird Flu Summit in Washington, DC features a line-up of speakers that will focus on public health- and industry-related concerns.

Washington, DC (New-Fields) March 15, 2007 – The second day of the 4th International Bird Flu Summit is off to a productive start of bird flu readiness with Dr. Mary Klote’s clinical perspective on the Health System Response to Pandemic Influenza.

Dr. Klote is a clinical laboratory immunologist and an asistant professor of medicine with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Joining her will be bird flu experts from around the world to focus on public health- and industry-related issues on pandemic prevention, preparedness, response and recovery at Washington, DC’s DoubleTree Hotel, Crystal City near National Airport. The purpose of the summit is to prepare the world to fight this potentially infectious disease.

Leading the panel of scientific and academic speakers is Luxembourg’s Laboratoire National de Santé scientific director Claude Muller—he will present his study on The Spread and Evolution of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Africa. The Center for Communications Programs at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health sends two representatives, Douglas Storey and Jose Rimon, II , to focus on communication issues affecting the proper control of bird flu outbreaks in infected countries. Mark Rasmuson with the Academy for Educational Development will also address this issue.

Rutger University’s Food Policy Institute Director William Hallman follows up with a talk on Risk Communication. Public health advisor with the National Sheriffs Association and Court Officers and Deputies Association director Fred Wilson will also share their experience and insights on this topic.

As technical director with Macro International, Denise Johnson leads MEASURE Evaluation’s project of developing a guide to monitoring and evaluating bird flu programs in SouthEast Asia—also a topic included in the conference.

Meanwhile, animal health and socio-economic factors are key concerns in the presentations of USDA’s director of preparedness and incident coordination Jonathan Zack, Ohio State Veterinarian Tony Forshey, Humane Society of the United States director Michael Greger, and University of Pennsylvania avian pathologist Sheryll Davison.

Industry leaders such Hoffman-La Roche medical director Dominic Iacuzio and Nanoviricides CEO wrap up the program with their findings on the use of antivirals as frontline defense against acute H5N1 infections.
